REPORT | Spain charms, convinces and wins its first friendly in China (1-3)

Weinan (China) 18 Sep 2015
The team led by Jorge Vilda beat the local squad thanks to goals by Ruth García, Amanda Sampedro and Silvia Meseguer

After taking part in their first World Cup ever, the renewed Spanish side got to China looking forward to continuing their dream. In charge of leading the team in the right direction and with great enthusiasm is Jorge Vilda. He was nominated twice for FIFA's Coach of the Year award and made his debut as Women's NT Head Coach at the Sports Centre in Weinan. Ahead of him was a thrilling challenge, yet a tough one given their opponent reached the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup held in Canada this Summer.

As though it were a qualifier match, the game started off with rhythm and intensity on both sides. Five minutes into the match Marta Torrejón put the Chinese keeper to the test. Liu Shanshan managed to save without great difficulty and saw the same action in the opposite pitch, Lola Gallardo would have to put her skills to the test too.  The opener would take a little longer to arrive, three minutes ahead of half time.  Ruth García made the most of a corner kick, headering the ball to the back of the net. With an advantage on the scoreboard and great performance throughout the first half.

However, Spain's joy was quickly dimmed with China scoring the equalizer soon after. Far from slowing down, Jorge Vilda's Spain kicked up the intensity up a notch. Amanda Sampedro's shot skimmed a defender, confusing the Chinese keeper, adding to Spain's score. This wasn't the last goal of night in Weinan. Silva Messeger would sentence the match with the 1-3 in a far top corner shot. The first friendly came to an end with the Spanish side in high spirits. Their following match takes place on Monday 21st September at the Chenzhou Stadium.
