The Spanish side achieves an historic milestone after winning the Algarve Cup thanks to a goal by Leila Ouahabi, in the team's first participation in the tournament

A wiseman once said that final are not to play, they're there to win them. Despite being the first time the national side took part, their time in Faro has written a new page in the Spanish squad's history. Jorge Vilda's team faced the fourth best side in the World, Canada in the Algarve Cup final.

The Spanish side, true to their style, got hold of the ball and in the first chance they had - went to the rival's goal. Leila Ouahabi shot outside the box and scored in the top corner of the Canadians goal. It was the fourth minute of the game. With an advantage from the get-go, Spain did not change their technique and managed their opponent's pressure. With quick transitions in attack, fifteen minutes had to go by for them to get close to Sandra Paños' goal.

Vilda's team's rhythm earned them full control and in the 35' a new chance came about, yet without luck. Olga García hit the post. Meanwhile the rivals relied on substitutes to change up the game and included Sinclair in the mix, a player with 250 international caps came onto the pitch in a search for the equalizer.

After half time, Canada kicked up the pressure a notch looking for the 1-1. They carried on creating danger in counterattacks, with speedy ball recoveries. In the 60' Sandra Paños dejected a corner kick with a well intentioned shot from the rivals.

As the minutes went by the tension grew on the pitch. The arrive on the right gave Sinclair a clear chance,  with a shot on target that went over the weodwork. In the sidelines Vilda's side continued cheering the team in the final stretches of the game. As the Spanish coach counted with substitutes the cheers increased.

Canada gave their all until the end, but Spain knew how to fight, play and managed to win in their first participation in the Algarve Cup. CHAMPIONS!!!
