MATCH REPORT | Masterclass and reward to end 2017 on a high (4-0)

Mallorca (Islas Baleares) 28 Nov 2017
Spain completed a spectacular match against Austria to hold onto the top spot in the World Cup Qualifier phase. Vilda's side scored 4 goals in Majorca

Spain closes off 2017 with a smile and in high spirits. It all started off quickly from the national anthems to the kick off whistle. The first clear chance came about by Alexia Putellas who celebrated her 50th cap with the Spanish side. With a powerful left-hook shot, Putellas netted the opener in the top corner.

The Spanish side led by Jorge Vilda soon took over the game and displayed its dominion, true to its style: ball control, pressure on the rival, quick transitions, ball recovery... In one of these chances Marta Corredera got hold of a lose canon, passed it to Amanda who crossed it to youngster Patri Guijarro to seal the second goal of the night. A significant moment for the midfielder who played in her hometown.

Comfortable in their spaces the Spanish players enjoyed the game and playing. Against them was a solid defensive opponent who put up defenders as walls to interrupt the Spanish side's attack. The final play in the first half came from a throw-in, which Irene Paredes headered beautifully, setting the 3-0 on the scoreboard.

Once the match resumed Austria seemed a little more active than in the first period, but Spain did not lose ground. With fast transitions and combinations, after several attempts Virginia Torrecilla flew in after a rebound and headered the fourth for Spain - a second local who got to score in her hometown.

With support and cheers from the local fans, Son Moix roared for Spain throughout the game. The final notable moment in the match, which was taken over by Spain in a football masterclass, was Aitana Bonmatí's debut with the Spanish side. The U19 and U17 Spain player played the final quarter hour with the senior squad.

After a splendid game Spain closes off 2017 in great shape and will return to official qualifiers in April with games against Finland and Austria.
