Olga García and Mari Paz Vilas scored for Jorge Vilda's side, giving Spain the win and the top spot within Group B

Spain and Austria are no strangers. They first crossed paths in the Netherland EURO last summer where Austria went through to the semifinals, later Spain beat the Austrian side 4-0 in Majorca in the 2019 France World Cup Qualifiers. In a month the second leg will take place, but in between: the Cyprus Cup.

Spain came out with a clear strategy: ball possession, moving among the rival's gaps and creating chances. Austria, on the other hand, worked with aerial plays, looking for stopped actions to get ahead. The first few clear shots on target came about for Jorge Vilda's side, who skimmed the post and an un-manned ball got lost in the box.

Half an hour into the game a combination play between Amanda - with a quality cross- handed the ball to Olga García, who would net the opener for Spain. Hermoso and Alexia Putellas were stellar in attack and gained control of the game by half time.

The second half of the match saw Vilda's side, calmer, with an advantage and gaining control on the pitch. Austria, in contrast, was nervous and sought goal with far shots.

Newcomers Marta Carro and Sandra Hernández came on for Spain, working well for the common purpose. Finally the hard work bore fruits, with Mari Paz Vilas - in an individual play- shooting the ball from the ground and scoring the final 0-2 in the 76th. Austria hardly shot on target, just a high ball over Lola Gallardo's goal.

Overall, a strong start for the Spanish side who after the debut triumph over Austria and Czech Republic-Belgium's result (2-1) earns top spot in Group B. Vilda's side face Belgium on Friday at 17:00 CET.
